Xela and surrounds
This church is San Andres Xecul, a beautifully painted church in a Mayan village. We also visited San Simeon. He is an Elvis like effigy who lives in the home of one of the villagers and people make offerings to him when they want something or someone fixed. He was smoking cigars and had plenty of alcoholic offerings. One women was throwing candles on a fire and raging away at him. It looked like she had been wronged in love and wanted him to sort out her ex!
The main square in Quetzaltenango. An old collonial town but lots of traffic and pollution from car exhausts made it not a good place to stay.
We´re not sure what this was. The patterns are made from coloured sawdust outside the church.

We visited thim man´s home in Salcaja. He weaves beautiful cloth and makes Caldo de Frutas - a very nice kind of fruit liquer.

Antigua - 10000 miles away and 500 years back in time
Antigua is an amazing old collonial city. It was the capital city at one stage but largely destroyed by an earthquake in the C15th. The remains have been preserved and partially rebuilt but there are no new buldings. The streets are narrow and cobbled, old buildings and ancient ruins everywhere. The town is quite high and surrounded by volcanos.
These beautiful birds were in the grounds of Casa Santo Domingo - a museum come hotel/restaurant/conference centre.
